SCARBOROUGH FAIRE
        Opening Weekend 2003

There was plenty of new construction evident in '03 (Photo, Above: the Newgate leading to the West Market at Scarborough, for example). Across the lane from the White Horse Tavern -- infamous hangout of Scarby Rennies both playtron and player alike during faire -- a new, covered stage had also been erected so various musicians could provide entertainment while Tavern patrons imbibed (Photo, Below)!

Finally, the old "Serengeti" -- the broad, treeless, sun-baked plain seperating the East Market of Scarborough from the West -- not only had more plantings of young trees, but several new merchant booths such as the "Wild Wolf Forge" (Photo, Below: offering helms, armor and LOTS of swords). Given another 20 years of Scarborough, and there should be a right shady forest where fair patrons can linger away from the hot, Texas sun!

Besides new construction, there were also some new gigs -- among them, the Sand Castle builders (Photo, Right: detailing one of several multi-towered keeps). It was fascinating for me watching them sculpt this AWESOME citadel. Alas, more shade would've really helped the spectators, not to mention the builders! As it was, I had to seek shade after only a few minutes, returning frequently during the day to follow the progress of their construction.
