        GEORGIA RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL 2003

King Henry and his immediate Court (Photo, Above) wave greetings to visitors at the Georgia Renaissance Festival 2003. I surmise that the Royal Lady is King Henry's sister and that the Cardinal is Woolsey, but alas, I cannot truly name names here, either Persona or Mundane. Unlike renaissance festivals elsewhere, you see, GARF apparently will not publish the names of their Performance Company nor detail the storyline which their cast follows daily! In fact, only a few meager clues -- the name of the storyline was "King Henry Takes A Wife" (Program Guide) while their website mentioned Tudor shops and cottages -- even suggest that His Majesty is, in truth, King Henry VIII. Overall, my lasting impression was that all the Royals, Cast and Court were only present at GARF simply to provide a renaissance "flavor" to the festival's "atmosphere". This is not terribly surprising: as a self-proclaimed "Medieval amusement park" (email advertising), GARF's sole advertising thrust both online and off merely touts the many, many rides available at their festival site. Since a TRUE renaissance festival is FAR more than just its' rides and games, I, personally, feel that GARF should change their name to something more like "Sixe Flagges O'er Georgia". That would certainly be closer to "truth in advertising"!!!

More Royal Court: Photo, Above: King Henry looks on while a young lad apparently tells a "fish story" to a Lady of the Court; Photo, Left: King Henry's sister watches approvingly as a young patron admires her new necklace.

Photo, Right: ladies of the Court indulge in a bit of gossip as a gentleman approaches with refreshments; Photo, Below: a portrait of the Sheriff (at right) -- or possibly Marshall of the Realm -- speaking with one of the Gentlemen of the Court (at left).
